Sugababe Heidi Range gets her pulse racing at a Virgin Active Zumba® class
By slhaf | April 20, 2010
H&F’s Sian Lewis mamboed and tangoed in an exclusive Zumba class with its creator Beto Perez and Sugababes band member Heidi Range, at Virgin Active, London, this week.
The Zumba Fitness programme is an exhilarating, high calorie-burning fitness class combining simple dance moves with high energy Latin music. Dance styles include salsa, merengue, mambo, flamenco, samba, belly dancing, hip hop and tango to name a few. This class is a real pulse raiser and you can’t help grinning throughout, thanks to the energy and enthusiasm of the instructors. Sian had fun working up a sweat and so did Sugababe Heidi. ‘I absolutely love Zumba – it’s really fun, and the Latin vibes definitely make you want to work out,’ she said.
The Zumba Fitness programme was the brainchild of celebrity fitness trainer Beto Perez in the 1990s. Due to take his usual hour-long aerobics class, Perez had left his standard aerobics mix-tapes at home, so was forced to freestyle the 60-minute session with the Latin-inspired music he had in his rucksack. The class went down so well, no one knew he’d improvised the lot! Perez kept on using his alternative aerobic music and soon the class, later named Zumba, became the most popular hour at the fitness centre.
‘This is why this programme is successful, it’s for fitness fans who love to party,’ says Perez.
Zumba is now an international phenomenon and Perez told H&F to look out for The Zumba Fitness Programme game for the Wii and XBox later this year, so watch this space!
