Women’s Rugby Team Bring Victory To Twickenham With A Historic Win
By slhaf | November 25, 2009
Although you wouldn’t have known it from this weekend’s papers, Saturday saw the England female team record their first victory over world champions, New Zealand, since 2001 in the Investec Challenge Double Header at Twickenham. With the Women’s Rugby World Cup only a year away and our England team claiming victory after victory, becoming World Champions is now a very realistic goal.
The women’s team secured a landmark 10-3 win over the Black Ferns with an impressive performance. The victory warmed the Twickenham faithful who had just witnessed the injury hit men’s team, defeated 6-19, on a wet autumn afternoon.
England Head Coach Gary Street said: “It’s brilliant to win here at Twickenham in front of our biggest ever crowd. Hopefully we have showed the people watching here today and those watching on Sky what a fantastic sport this is, and how skilful the women’s game is at this level.”
With a record crowd of 12,500, spectators were treated to a beautiful display by skilful, dedicated female athletes who have raised the sport to a new level. Their outstanding performance clearly demonstrated why women’s rugby is becoming one of the world’s fastest growing sports.
“From here now the important thing is that we keep moving forward and improving. We know that winning the World Cup is not a pipe dream anymore. We can be victorious and experience that ultimate joy of winning, that is our goal for the next nine months” said Woman of the Match and Team Captain, Catherine Spencer.
NikeWomen is continuing to hero the success of the Women’s England Rugby Team by working closely with them through the ‘Here I Am’ campaign to ensure great sporting moments like these are celebrated.
