Vertical Rush, London’s Original and Highest Tower Run, to be held at Tower 42
By slhaf | November 26, 2009
Vertical Rush, the original and highest tower running event in the UK, returns for its second year on 25th February 2010 at Tower 42, the tallest building in the City of London. Vertical Rush is a uniquely demanding event that challenges participants to run up the 42 floors of the Tower in the fastest time possible to raise money for housing charity Shelter.
Following the extraordinary popularity of this year’s event where 600 runners raised over £165,000 for Shelter, Vertical Rush 2010 is hoping to attract 1200 runners who will be aiming to raise more than £250,000.
Vertical Rush 2009 saw participants climb to the top of Tower 42 in an average race time of 8 minutes 4 seconds. The winner, professional stair runner Matthias Jahn from Germany, completed the 600ft climb in an astonishing 4 minutes 22 seconds and commented, “I’ve run courses all over the world, but I don’t think there is another tower running event in Europe which attracts so many participants.”
Louise Parkes, Shelter’s Director of Fundraising, said: “The first Vertical Rush was a towering success thanks to the fantastic effort from all those who scaled the 42 floors of the City’s tallest building. We’re sure the second Vertical Rush will be bigger and better and raise even more funds for Shelter’s vital work helping homeless and badly housed families.”
Inspired by the famous Empire State Building Run Up which takes place annually in New York, Tower 42 and Shelter are proud to bring the tower running craze to the UK. Vertical Rush sees groups of runners, who compete individually or in teams, setting off in hourly slots to set their chip-timed personal best times.
Peter Merrett, General Manager at Tower 42, comments “Vertical Rush 2009 was the biggest charity event in Tower 42’s history and a huge success – as such, it was an easy decision for us to play host to the event again. The Tower is an iconic City location and so we hope to make Vertical Rush a staple feature in the London sporting calendar.”
Famous faces that participated in Vertical Rush 2009 included Dragons’ Den star Duncan Bannatyne, Gladiator Tempest and Blue Peter’s Andrew Akinwolere.

Last month I participated in my first charity climb of the CN Tower in Toronto.
It was an amazing experience.
Anyone who is on the fence about doing the Vertical Rush should get off the fence and start training
