Q) What is a macrobiotic diet and how is it beneficial? Is it vegetarian and could it help me lose weight?

A) The macrobiotic diet was developed in the 1920s by Japanese philosopher George Ohsawa. He believed by eating a simple, plant-based diet – as close to a traditional way of eating as possible – people could live in harmony with nature.

Ohsawa also believed this way of eating could cure cancer and other serious illnesses, but there’s no evidence it’s any more beneficial than other diets that are low in fat and rich in plant-based foods, such as grains and fruit and vegetables.

The word macrobiotic is derived from Greek and means long life, and the diet balances ‘yin’ (stimulating) and ‘yang’ (strengthening) foods. Although it wasn’t designed as a weight-reducing diet, you may find you lose weight following it – simply because you’re eating less. Also, as it’s low fat and high in fibre, you’re more likely to feel full quicker, which is obviously helpful for anyone trying to lose weight.
