Q)
I recently took a home food intolerance test which indicated I should cut out yeast. Does this just mean bread, or are there other products I should avoid? What can I eat instead of bread?

A) First, a word of caution, home allergy testing kits are not always reliable. The only way to really find out is to remove all yeast from your diet for at least four weeks and see if your symptoms improve. If they do, then you have your answer.

Unfortunately, bread is not the only source of yeast in modern diets; you’ll need to avoid natural sources as well as those added to food. Steer clear of foods made with bread, such as sausages, fish with breadcrumbs and pizza, as well as fermented foods (cheese and buttermilk), wine, beer and cider, fruit juice, grapes, plums and overripe fruit, dried fruits, soya sauce, yeast extract (Bovril and Marmite), mushrooms, vitamin supplements that contain brewers yeast, vinegar and pickles.

As an alternative to bread, try soda bread, rye crispbreads, ryvita, rice cakes or oatcakes. You will find a comprehensive list of foods you can and can’t eat at www.complemed.co.uk/patientguides/yeast-free-diet.htm.

If you don’t notice any improvement in your symptoms after three weeks, reintroduce yeast into your diet and ask your GP to refer you to a registered dietician who will be able to help you work out what the problem may be.
